KOKATA: The Calcutta HC on Friday pulled up IIT-Kharagpur director V K Tiwari while hearing the case of a third-year student’s death on campus, and also asked police not to soft-peddle the matter, even as the institute assured that stern deterrent measures would be taken not just in the present case, but also to prevent any such occurrence in future.
“Do you have children of your own? If you do, you will understand the pain of a father whose child dies while studying in a premier institute like IIT-Kharagpur,” justice Rajasekhar Mantha told Tiwari, whose handling of the entire case has upset the court. The body of Faizan Ahmed was found on campus on October 14 last year, following which allegations of ragging had come to the fore. His parents, residents of Assam’s Tinsukia, had moved court, questioning the police probe and the IIT’s role after Faizan’sbodywas discovered in a hostel room, which was not the one he had been allotted.
During an earlier hearing, the HC had sought a comprehensive report.
The court will hear the case again on February 13, after the IIT’s board of governors’ meeting.
