GURGAON: Bracing for another agitation by farmers, Haryana Police is fortifying state and city borders with barricades and deploying 50 companies of paramilitary forces along with cops to ensure that protesters don’t reach Delhi-NCR.
Police said they are employing lessons learnt from the year-long farmers’ agitation on Delhi’s borders in 2020-21. On Thursday, farmers from UP went on a sit-in demonstration on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway as police blocked their protest march to Delhi.
Several farmer associations, mostly in Ambala, have called for another protest on Feb 13 to demand a law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP), one of the conditions they had set when they agreed to withdraw their agitation in 2021.Haryana police chief Shatrujeet Kapur had a meeting with top officers on Thursday to review law and order preparations.
A senior police officer said they have worked with the Army, railway engineers and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to come up with a barricade that “can’t be breached even with armoured vehicles” or tractors. He added that the intention was not to harm any protesters.
