BENGALURU: As Gujarat police intensify efforts to capture the masterminds of the recently intercepted “donkey flight” in France, new data from the MEA sheds light on the prevalence of nearly 3,000 such unscrupulous agents/agencies across India, exploiting job seekers aspiring to work abroad.
Among the 2,925 identified agencies, Gujarat has 56, and Karnataka has 80, but the states with the highest number of illegal agencies are Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Delhi, totalling 1,832.
“Donkey flight” refers to an illicit immigration method for unauthorised entry into countries like the US.
Despite regular advisories and actions taken against fake job offers, the issue persists, with 682 complaints received between January 2020 and November 2023. The complaints have been forwarded to state governments for investigation and prosecution under the Emigration Act 1983.
