NEW DELHI: Terrorist-initiated incidents in J&K fell by 81% from 228 in 2018, the year prior to abrogation of Article 370, to 43 in 2023 (until November 30), while encounters witnessed a 74% decline from 189 to 48 in the corresponding period, according to the home ministry.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, junior home minister Nityanand Rai said civilian killings in the Union territory have declined from 55 in 2018 to 13 in 2023, while fatalities among the security forces were down from 91 to 25 during this period.
Answering a similar question in the Rajya Sabha a couple of weeks back, Rai had put the total number of terrorist-initiated incidents in J&K at 153 in 2019, 126 in 2020, 129 in 2021 and 125 in 2022. The total encounters by the security forces were shared as 102 in 2019, 118 in 2020, 100 in 2021 and 117 in 2022.
Regarding a sub-query on the investment flow into J&K since Article 370 was nullified, the junior minister said a total Rs 5319 crore had been invested in ventures across the UT between 2019-20 and 2022-23 (until October 31), with Rs 297 crore invested in 2019-20, Rs 412 crore in 2020-21, Rs 377 crore in 2021-22, Rs 2153 crore in 2022-23 and Rs 2,080 crore in 2023-24 (until October 31).
