NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from all states on fresh claims by the women’s wing of CPI that hate crimes and alleged lynching of Muslims by cow vigilante groups are increasing across the country despite the SC taking cognisance of its PIL on the issue three months ago.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for National Federation of Indian Women, informed a bench of Justices B R Gavai, Arvind Kumar and P K Mishra that “people transporting meat and cattle” are being thrashed by vigilante groups and then police registers FIRs against the injured persons, making them accused.
On July 28, the bench headed by Justice Gavai had sought response from the Centre and six states – Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh – to the PIL, which claimed an “alarming rise in cases of lynchings against Muslims” despite the SC’s 2018 ruling directing the states to act against hate crimes.
