JAMMU: Former J&K CM and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti praised Sunday first PM Jawaharlal Nehru for creating a “modern India” and Rahul Gandhi for his “Bharat Jodo Yatra” in comments seen as an attempt to cosy up to Congress after burning bridges with BJP.
“They (BJP) are defaming Nehru who played a key role in the freedom struggle, went to jail and laid the foundations of a strong and modern India through industrialisation and by setting up education infrastructure,” she said addressing PDP workers’ convention in Jammu.
She went on: “Rahul Gandhi is being targeted by BJP as he is from the Gandhi family, which has a history of sacrifice for the country…they call him Shahzada (prince), but he is on the road (for the march) and braving harsh weather to unite and safeguard the country and its democratic institutions.”
Asking people to support Rahul, she targeted BJP by calling it the “most corrupt party” in the country. “How did it become the richest party in the past eight years? Those who used to wear Rs 5,000 spectacles, walk around now wearing glasses priced at Rs 1.5 lakh,” she said.
Mehbooba was CM in a PDP-BJP coalition government from 2016 until the alliance broke in June 2018. She has been scathing in her comments against BJP since then, particularly after the Centre removed J&K’s special status by abrogating Article 370 and 35A, and hived the state into two Union territories.
