NEW DELHI: In the Parliament security breach case on December 13, the five apprehended suspects disclosed that they initially contemplated self-immolation and distributing pamphlets before settling on the strategy to infiltrate the Lok Sabha chamber with smoke canisters, as per Delhi Police officials on Saturday.
The Delhi Police’s Special Cell, leading the investigation, intends to record the statement of BJP MP Pratap Simha, who authorized visitor passes for the two individuals that breached security to enter the House.
Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, the two men who breached security, jumped into the Lok Sabha’s chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, releasing yellow smoke from canisters and shouting slogans before being subdued by MPs. Simultaneously, Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi released colored smoke with the slogan “tanashahi nahi chalegi” outside the Parliament premises. Lalit Jha, the fifth accused, allegedly circulated protest videos on social media.
“Before finalizing this plan (to jump into the Lok Sabha chamber), they (the accused) had explored certain ways that could be impactful in sending their message to the government,” said a Delhi Police official familiar with the investigations.
Initially considering self-immolation by covering their bodies with fireproof gel and distributing pamphlets inside Parliament, the accused ultimately opted for the executed plan. The Special Cell’s Counter Intelligence team plans to record the statement of Simha, the BJP’s MP from Mysore, in connection with the case.
Late on Friday, investigators took the accused to various meeting places related to the breach. The police may seek Parliament’s permission to recreate the breach on the anniversary of the 2001 attacks. Mahesh Kumwat and Kailash, who allegedly aided Jha’s escape, have not received a clean chit. Jha will be taken to Nagaur in Rajasthan, where he stayed after fleeing, and to the location where he claimed to have destroyed mobile phones.
All five accused have been remanded in seven days’ police custody.
