NEW DELHI: Minister for petroleum and urban development Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said Coangress leader Rahul Gandhi did not want the Opposition to tend the inauguration of the new Parliament building since he could not himself attend after being disqualified as a MP.
“Some people choose not to attend (the inaugural function) and they want to make a political point out of that. In one particular case you could say that one particular gentleman was disqualified and he could not have attended, so he probably did not want others to attend. There’s a possibility of that,” Puri said at the Times Now India Economic Conclave 2023 without naming Gandhi.
Launching a scathing attack on the Congress and economists aligned to the party for their criticism of the government’s achievements, especially economic growth, Puri said the Opposition “does not want India to do well”.
Pointing out the 7.2% GDP growth in 2022-23 and rapid development under the Narendra Modi government’s watch, Puri said: “There is an organised effort, obviously financed by someone, to say that India can do no right.”
“Why do some people, instead of joining in the celebration, choose to put a false construct on it (India’s economic growth),” he said, adding Congress-aligned economists saying the economic growth cannot be taken seriously due to structural faults were talking “gibberish”.
“Once you have projected a 5% growth and you end up with 7.2%, the intelligent thing to do is to say I am sorry, I got it wrong. I am happy and if there are any more steps to be taken, please take it,” Puri said.
On Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s protest against the Centre issuing Ordinance to end the state government’s role in posting of senior bureaucrats, Puri said: “On all Central schemes where Mr Kejriwal gets involved, we have the worst performance registered. Their (Aaam Aadmi Party’s) style of governance is antithetical to what needs to be done.”
