In a rare show of protest against a Supreme Court collegium decision, the Delhi High Court Bar Association on Thursday publicly opposed the proposal to transfer Justice Gaurang Kanth to Calcutta high court, reports Abhinav Garg. The bar body has announced a day’s strike on July 17, calling the transfer “rarest of rare cases”.
In a resolution, the bar association said “such transfer will adversely affect dispensation of justice on account of reduction in the existing strength of judges”. Kanth was elevated from the bar to the bench in May 2022. The proposal to transfer the judge was made on July 5.
Amid the protests, the law ministry on Thursday notified the transfer of three high court judges — Justice Donadi Ramesh from Andhra HC to Allahabad HC; Justice Kanneganti Lalitha Kumari from Telangana HC to Karnataka HC; and Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi of Gujarat HC to Patna HC.
