BHOPAL: Cheetah Shaurya, aka Freddie, the most flamboyant of the lot and a bundle of energy, died suddenly in Kuno National Park, in MP’s Sheopur, on Tuesday afternoon. It’s the 10th cheetah death since March 2023.
It’s not yet known what killed Shaurya, said officials, adding that they are awai-ting the autopsy report. The signs that preceded its death were alarming.
Around 11am, a tracking team noticed Shaurya staggering about in an uncoordinated manner. They alerted officers who decided to bring it in for medical evaluation. It was tranquillised and taken to Kuno vets, but it never recovered consciousness, say sources. Shaurya died at 3pm.
Originally named Freddie, it formed a formidable coalition with brother Elton, aka Gaurav, as the two hunted and lived together. The “Rock Stars” were indeed stars among the cheetahs translocated from Africa.
What made Shaurya even more significant to Project Cheetah is that it was the father of Jwala’s cub, the lone survivor of a litter of four tragically rejected by its captivity-raised mother due to inadequate maternal instincts. It’s currently under the care of vets, but plans are underway to re-wild the 10-month-old cub in Kuno, simulating natural conditions and providing the necessary training for its survival.
In June 2023, there was a fierce cheetah fight in Kuno as Shaurya and Gaurav took on the South African coalition over territory, particularly access to prey and females.
