NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed Indian relief teams’ work in quake-hit Turkey and affirmed that India is always ready to first-responder whenever there is a crisis in the world.
Addressing the personnel who had returned from quake-hit Turkey, Modi said, that in the last few years India has strengthened its identity not just as a self-sufficient but selfless country.
“Today there is goodwill for India in the world. Whenever there is a calamity, India acts as the first responder and offers help. Be it Nepal earthquake, Maldives or Sri Lanka crisis, India was the first to come forward to help. Now other countries’ trust in NDRF is also increasing,” PM Modi said.
“India has strengthened its identity in last few years as a country of self-sufficiency which also selflessly helps other countries. We have to strengthen our identity as world’s best relief and rescue team,” he added.
India launched Operation Dost to extend assistance to Turkey and Syria after devastating quakes in the region. The government sent tons of relief material to both Syria and Turkey in collaboration with the Indian Army as part of the Operation.
Over 250 Indian personnel from NDRF and the Army were engaged in rescue and relief work in Turkey and Syria.
More than 46,000 people have been killed in the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria and the toll is expected to soar, with some 264,000 apartments in Turkey destroyed and many still missing as rescuers listen for signs of life under the rubble.
