NEW DELHI: Poswuyi Swuro, born in Nagaland’s Phek district, met Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose when the Indian National Army (INA) visited Ruzazho Village in the state on April 4, 1941 as part of its ‘Delhi Chalo’ campaign. The 103-year-old was in his early twenties during his first encounter with Netaji.
A day after their first meeting in Ruzazho, Netaji appointed young Poswuyi Swuro the ‘Area Administrator’. A patriotic son of the soil, Poswuyi served the position of Dobashi (Area Administrator) with patriotism, courage and immense determination. He passed on the information announced by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to the villagers and also travelled around on foot from village to village on behalf of the INA informing village leaders about the rations to be collected for the Japanese in camp. The Japanese also visited Ruzazho village along with INA in 1941 while passing through Jessami village in Manipur.
At present the oldest person from Ruzazho village, Poswuyi Swuro became the first Christian convert from his native village. Ruzazho village was said to be the first Indian village to be administered by the ‘Azad Hind Government’ led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
While serving as the Area Administrator, Poswuyi also served as a guide leading the troops toward British forces, which was a highly risky task during the prevailing war situation. He knew the terrain and routes of the village and nearby areas very well, hence alongside his brother Vesuyi, Poswuyi used to lead the Japanese and INA troops to the battle frontline on foot.
Before Netaji Bose left Ruzazho village, he spoke to the village saying he’ll come back and once they win the war, he will build schools, hospitals, roads, etc for the village. With such promises, the villagers gave their best for the cause of the war. Unfortunately, the Japanese and INA lost the war and thus retreated leaving those promises of Netaji which were never fulfilled.
After the war, Poswuyi lived a simple life engaging in social work for the welfare of the village and introduced education in his village in 1950.
Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu visited and interacted with Poswuyi in his native village in 2021.
