MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde said on Wednesday that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government did not cooperate on the Vedanta-Foxconn project. The statement comes a day after the joint venture of setting up a mega semiconductor plant, shifted base to the neighbouring state of Gujarat.
Shinde, who took oath as the chief minister on June 30, said he did not want to get into the blame game over Gujarat bagging the project and asked the opposition to introspect. He also said that Maharashtra had offered incentives worth Rs 39,000 crore for the project.
Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) members Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress have severely criticised the Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government over the project, moving to Gujarat.
Shinde was the minister for urban development and public works (Public Undertakings) in the erstwhile MVA government (November 2019 to June 2022) headed by Uddhav Thackeray.
Amid the opposition criticism, Shinde said, “The Vedanta group has said that it will set up an iPhone and TV manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. Even PM Modi has assured a bigger project in the state as it has good potential”.
Meanwhile Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray said that besides the Vedanta-Foxconn project, Maharashtra has lost a proposed bulk drug park project pursued with the Centre by the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
“Chief Minister Eknath Shinde must not be aware that we have lost on the second project as well,” the Worli MLA said.
He alleged Shinde had “betrayed” not just the Shiv Sena leadership but also the youth of Maharashtra hoping for good employment opportunities with these two projects.
