A Sri Lankan Tamil refugee died on Wednesday morning after being hit by a train in Tamil Nadu’s Rameshwaram. Railway Police, who seized the body, are probing if it was an accident or an attempted suicide.
The 55-year-old man, identified as Murugaiah, hailed from the Trikonamalai region in Sri Lanka. He has been living as a refugee in India for the last 32 years.
The man had come to Tamil Nadu in 1990 at the peak of the Sri Lankan civil war. He was staying with his family in Mandapam Camp in the AKS Thoppu area of Ramanathapuram district.
On Wednesday morning, July 6, he was hit by a train around 8.30 am while trying to cross the tracks near Mandapam Camp railway station.
Rameswaram railway police have seized the body. They are investigating the matter further to find out if it was an accident or a suicide.
