Setting the scene for an intense commencement of the winter session of Parliament, the Lok Sabha ethics panel’s findings on Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra will be presented on the inaugural day of the session this Monday. As per the agenda listed on the Lok Sabha website, the issue is slated as item number 5. Ethics committee chairman and BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, along with his party colleague Aparajita Sarangi, will present the report shortly after the session commences. The committee, on November 8, had unanimously endorsed a report proposing Moitra’s removal from the lower House on grounds of ‘cash-for-query’ allegations. In favour of the report, six members, including Congress’s dissident MP Praneet Kaur, voted, while four opposition MPs opposed it. Following the report presentation, junior parliamentary affairs minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to propose a motion to accept the report and endorse the committee’s recommendations. Sources suggest that the committee has recommended Moitra’s expulsion. It is anticipated that the opposition might request a discussion, but the decision rests with the speaker, who may either permit it or proceed with the motion without further debate.
