An outbreak of influenza-like illness, predominantly affecting children, has been reported in northern China, causing a surge in respiratory symptoms among affected individuals. Chinese hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with sick children, prompting concern and heightened surveillance measures. The Indian Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has declared a “low risk” for India regarding the recent outbreak of H9N2 and pneumonia cases in China. According to the ministry, there is no evidence of unusual pathogens or unexpected clinical manifestations in the reported cases. In response to the outbreak, the Indian Health Ministry discussed preparedness against human cases of avian influenza, specifically focusing on the H9N2 subtype reported in China in October 2023. Emphasizing the importance of enhanced surveillance and improved coordination, the ministry assured that India is prepared for any potential public health exigency. The statement from the ministry highlighted the significant strengthening of health infrastructure in India following the experience with the Covid-19 pandemic. This preparedness includes measures to handle potential outbreaks and ensure public health safety. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has requested data from Chinese authorities to better understand the nature and extent of the outbreak. The global health organization is actively engaged in monitoring and responding to the situation, reflecting the international concern over the spread of respiratory illnesses.
