Mulayam Singh Yadav was only one of the two last surviving socialists of Ram Manohar Lohia vintage in Uttar Pradesh, the other being Rewati Raman Singh, five years younger than him. Yadav did not share the same rapport with Singh as he did with a host of his other peers, because Singh parted ways with him once the Vishwanath Pratap Singh-led Janata Dal split in November 1990. Yadav went along with Chandra Shekhar’s Samajwadi Janata Party, while Singh remained with VP Singh, an old friend from Allahabad.
