River erosion has continued to wreak havoc in the state, the villagers of Assam’s Barpeta district had appealed to the state’s administration to take precautionary measures. As monsoon approached, the entire Brahmaputra valley is at present reeling under a devastating flood. Soil erosion triggered by the swollen Brahmaputra River has accelerated the impact of the disaster. It causes immense damage to the life and property of families living on the bank of the river.The mighty Brahmaputra river has swallowed hundreds of bighas of land in the Satra Kanara area of Assam’s Barpeta district. Several houses, school buildings, and religious institutions on the bank of the river have become a memory. Hundreds of families were forced to demolish their houses and move to safer places. Farmers on the river bank are turned into paupers overnight as they stare at permanent loss of their land.Jahan Ali, a resident of Satra Kanara said, most of the affected people are now living in Goalpara district and some of them are now working in Dimapur, Lucknow, and Delhi as daily wage labourers. “Around 95 per cent of people of this area are dependent on agricultural activities, but their lands were swallowed by the Brahmaputra river. Now they are landless and are facing lots of problems,” Jahan Ali said. According to local villagers, many families in the area have been affected due to the river erosion and many of them have lost their homes.The mighty Brahmaputra river and Jaljali river had taken over the land and several houses, school buildings, and religious institutions were destroyed in the past years also.According to Assam Government, the state has so far lost about 4.27 lakh hectares of land due to the soil erosion caused by the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries.
