The Supreme Court has issued directives to the Solicitor General to furnish an updated status report concerning the actions of Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Assembly bills. The court has underscored the importance of governors taking action on bills before they escalate to Supreme Court disputes, prompting introspection in this regard. The Solicitor General has informed the court that the Punjab Governor has indeed acted on the bills and has additionally categorized the Punjab government’s plea as superfluous litigation. The Supreme Court has scheduled the matter for a hearing on November 10. Notably, Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s approval is a prerequisite for money bills within the Assembly, and while he approved two bills, he withheld his endorsement for three money bills, citing their purported illegitimacy. This controversy also led to the abrupt conclusion of the October 20-21 session.
