Tamil Nadu government started the sale of tomatoes in ration shops at a subsidised rate in Chennai on July 05. The subsidised rate was fixed at Rs 60 per kg. Earlier, tomato was sold at a retail price of Rs 100 to 130. Last week, Tamil Nadu state government decided to sell tomatoes in farm fresh outlets as rate continued to soar, Later, the State Government decided to sell tomato in ration shops for the people’s benefit. As per the decision of TN Government, tomatoes were sold through the public distribution system in ration shops. Tomato prices have recently shot up in the markets across the country from Rs 10-20 per kg to a price of Rs 100-130 per kg. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain.
