Centre has filed affidavit in the Supreme Court against multiple PILs challenging three-year jail term for husbands who give Triple Talaq to their wives. The Supreme Court announced earlier on Monday that it will hear petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, in November 2023. The Central government passed the Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 on July 31, 2019, criminalising the pronouncement of divorce in such a manner and providing a sentence of up to 3 years in jail for the same.
