Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathy temple, popularly known as Madayi
Kavu Temple, holds a significant place as the foremost Bhadrakali temple in
North Kerala. The deity worshipped here takes the formidable form of Bhadrakali
and is also revered as Thiruverkadu Achchi. The shrine is located at Madayi in Kannur district, Kerala.
Madayi Kavu Temple Story
Madayi Kavu Temple has its roots in various legends
regarding its origin. According to one account, the Bhagavathy,
Madayi Kavilamma, initially resided in the Rajarajeshwara Temple. However, due
to her non-vegetarian nature, it became unsuitable for her to remain in the
Shiva temple. Consequently, she instructed the reigning king of the region to
erect a separate shrine for her.
In another myth, the region of Madayi was once plagued by
the demon Darika. Madayikavilamma vanquished the demon and appealed to Lord
Shiva to establish a temple in close proximity. Responding to her plea, Lord
Shiva directed his disciple Parashuram to consecrate a shrine for the divine
feminine energy. Parasurama created the Madayipara, upon which the sacred
shrine was constructed. This temple is renowned as a sanctuary for seeking
protection against occult sorcery, including black magic and witchcraft.
Madayi Kavu Temple History
Madayi Kavu Temple, steeped in history and religious
significance, faced a tumultuous period during the incursion of Hyder Ali and
Tipu Sultan into the Malabar region. The followers of the Islamist army
perpetrated acts of destruction, targeting nearby temples, among which the
Vadukunnu Shiva Temple fell victim to their destructive zeal.
During this dark chapter, Madayi Kavu Temple itself was not
spared from desecration. Shockingly, the sacred grounds were profaned with the
entrails of slaughtered cattle, symbolizing a blatant disregard for the
sanctity of the religious site. In the face of such sacrilege, a local Nair
warrior of great valor, named Vengayil Chathukutty, emerged as a symbol of
resistance and protector of the temple’s sanctity.
In an act of courage and righteous fury, Vengayil
Chathukutty confronted the miscreant responsible for the desecration. The
confrontation culminated in a fierce battle, during which the warrior valiantly
beheaded the perpetrator. Undeterred by the gruesome nature of the act,
Chathukutty delivered the severed head to the temple authorities, symbolizing
not only his commitment to defending the sacred grounds but also sending a
powerful message of defiance against the forces that sought to tarnish the religious
fabric of the region.
This historic event at Madayi Kavu Temple stands as a
testament to the resilience of the local community in the face of adversity and
the unwavering dedication of individuals like Vengayil Chathukutty, who,
through their acts of valor, ensured the preservation of the temple’s sanctity
and the rich cultural heritage it represents.
The current temple has been renovated. The earlier temple,
which was destroyed in Tipu Sultan’s attack, was reconstructed during the reign
of “Koonan Rajavu” (King of Chirakkal). Maheshwaran Bhattathiripad, born in the
Thukalassery Kuzhikkattu Tharavadu, played a key role in installing the murti
of Madayi Bhagavathi. The murti was made under his able leadership in the
Kadu Sharkara Prayogam. Maheshwaran Bhattathiripad was born in the year 970 of
the Kollavarsham (Malayalam calendar) and passed away on the Shukla Saptami day
of the month of Mithuna (June 6th) in the year 1040 as Malayalam Kolla Varsham.
His notable work is “Kuzhikkattupacha.”
Unique Worship At Madayi Kavu Temple
The pujas and rituals at Madayi Kavu is very different from
other Bhagavathi temples. The temple rites are in Koula sampradaya.
Temple worship in the Koula sampradaya follows distinctive
rituals. The temple’s priests, although Brahmins, belong to the Podavar Brahmin
sect, which is associated with Kali worship. Interestingly, these priests,
unlike Namboothiris, are not restricted from consuming meat.
The temple houses two primary shrines (sreekovil): one
dedicated to Lord Shiva facing east and the other to the Goddess (referred to
locally as Bhadrakali) facing west. Lord Shiva is represented by a Shila Linga,
while the Goddess is depicted in a sitting posture with a right-folded leg,
crafted from Kadu Sharkara yogam. The Goddess possesses eight arms holding two
tridents, a sword, a shield, a skull, a rope, an elephant-hook, and a serpent.
This temple is renowned for its potent goddess, with a unique aspect known as
Rurujith-Vidhanam. During athazha pooja, offerings such as toddy and meat are
presented to Bhagavathi.
Upadevatas Worshipped In Madayi Kavu Temple
The Upadevatas are venerated within the temple premises. In
front of the main sanctum sanctorum dedicated to the Goddess is the shrine
housing the Sapthamathrukkal. The arrangement of the Sapthamathrukkal murtis
are as follows: Chamundi takes the first position, followed by Brahmi,
Maheswari, Koumari, Vaishnavi, Vaaraahi, and Indraani, all facing north.
Veerabhadran faces west, and Lord Ganapathi faces east. Additionally, there are
other subordinate deities, including Kshetrapala facing west, Lord Sastha
facing east, and murtis representing Sree Pathaala Bhadra, Sree Bhairavi, and
Sree Bhairavan.
