LUCKNOW: Deepak Kumar, the 1990-batch IAS officer, was on Tuesday appointed additional chief secretary, home, in place of Sanjay Prasad, who had to relinquish the post as per an Election Commission of India direction to state govt.
Kumar already held the charge of the departments of finance, institutional, finance and external aided projects, secondary education and commissioner finance. Now, he also has the charge of home, gopan, visa passport, jail and vigilance.
EC on Monday had directed six states to remove the home secretaries who also held charge in the respective CM’s Office. This was done to avoid conflict of interest since the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls has come into effect.
Once the charge was removed from Prasad, it was passed on to chief secretary DS Mishra. Mishra had been required to send a list of three officers to the ECI which then selected Kumar, reportedly on the basis of his seniority.
The other officers whose names featured in the panel were 1993-batch officer Alok Kumar II who is principal secretary, sports and youth welfare, and 1998 batch officer Ajay Chauhan, who is principal secretary, PWD.
Prasad continues to retain his remaining departments and is principal secretary CM, protocol and information.
